There’s a new bell of the ball in northeastern Colorado Springs. “Belle” is the recently erected 5,000-pound steel sculpture of a Percheron draft horse by world-renowned Scottish sculptor Andy Scott. She now towers 15 feet high in Norwood Development Group’s new Percheron, a planned community at East Woodmen Road and Banning Lewis Parkway.

It’s not uncommon to see vacant buildings or unused sites around town. But one Colorado Springs developer is trying to change the way we think about temporary spaces, in hopes of revitalizing existing properties — for the time being. Enter: Meanwhile Block, a downtown creative hub that makes up an entire city block.

These bronze, round characters have become a staple of Colorado Springs. In July, the Plaza of the Rockies added three Humpty Dumpty sculptures, created by Minneapolis-based artist Kimber Fiebiger. This brings the city’s collection to just under two dozen statues, with the majority downtown.

Norwood Development has proposed construction of a 12-story, 194,000-square-foot office building in southwest downtown, with a rooftop lounge, fitness center, golf simulator and other features designed to attract businesses and give their employees a reason to come back to the office from their remote workspaces.

Norwood Development Group, one of the city’s largest real estate developers, plans to build a six-story, 122-unit apartment community northeast of Vermijo Avenue and Weber Street, which will go up adjacent to a five-story, 154-unit project the company is constructing northwest of Vermijo and Wahsatch avenues.
